Volunteer

Assistance League of Colorado Springs has two types of volunteers (1) Member Volunteers and (2)  Community Volunteers.  Member Volunteers are members of our chapter.  Community Volunteers are not chapter members.   Please see additional information below.

MEMBER VOLUNTEER

Assistance League of Colorado Springs is always ready to welcome new members. Prospective new members may apply for membership to the Membership Chairman at any time.  Each new member is assigned a mentor from the membership to ensure that the member has a smooth transition into the chapter.

Prospective members normally attend an Informational Coffee to learn more about the national organization and our chapter.  The last Informational Coffee was held in August 2010; the next coffee will be scheduled when needed.

The Membership Tea is the time when prospective members decide to become members and pay their membership dues.

Each member attends an orientation that is normally four sessions.  During that time, the member attends classes to learn more about Assistance League and our chapter, visits our thrift store named Bargain Box, visits our Operation School Bell® facility, and learns about our philanthropic programs.  Once orientation is completed, the member decides whether to become a voting member or an associate (nonvoting member).

VOTING MEMBERSHIP:

Annual membership dues for voting members are $55.00.

Each voting member fulfills certain obligations listed below:

  • Pays a $50.00 fundraising obligation.
  • Serves a minimum of 60 service hours per fiscal year.
  • Commits to a minimum of one (1) philanthropic program.  Committee members are required to serve as many times as needed to complete the program.
  • Works a minimum of 40 hours on the sales floor of our thrift store, or a minimum of 40 hours in Operation School Bell, or a combined 40 hours in our thrift store and Operation School Bell. (These 40 hours are part of the 60 service hours obligation.)
  • Attends seven (7)  meetings in a fiscal year of twelve (12) monthly meetings (June 1- May 31).

 ASSOCIATE (NONVOTING) MEMBERSHIP:

Annual membership dues for associates are $150.00.

Associates do not vote at regular meetings or hold elected office.  They may serve on committees, may participate in and support philanthropic programs and fundraising activities, and may attend chapter meetings and social functions.  Associates may become voting members upon written request to the Membership Chairman and Board approval.

If you have questions about membership, please call 719-475-2627 and leave your name and phone number.  Someone will return your call.

COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER

Assistance League of Colorado Springs primarily relies on members to fulfill its volunteer needs.
However, there are occasions when the help of community volunteers who are not Assistance League members are both needed and appreciated.

Watch this website for current information on our community volunteer needs.

COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER NEEEDS

Fortunately, at the present time, Assistance League of Colorado Springs has a sufficient number of community volunteers.  If you are interested in becoming a member of our chapter, please see the heading “Member Volunteer” shown above on this page.

OUR COMMUNITY VOLUNTEER POLICY (exerpt)

Assistance League of Colorado Springs is an all-volunteer corporation and, as such, normally shall not accept as community volunteers individuals who are eligible to be members of the chapter.  There are, however, circumstances under which the chapter needs and welcomes the services of individuals without regard to chapter membership.  These circumstances are described below:

A. Assistance League of Colorado Springs may enter into written agreements with organizations to provide community volunteer services to the chapter.

B. The Board may identify specific services needed by the chapter that chapter members are not able or not willing to provide.  The Board may enlist community volunteers to provide such services.

C. The Board may accept as community volunteer students who are pursuing community service as part of their educational endeavors.  The Board shall identify the kinds of services that students may provide to the chapter.

It is the responsibility of the chapter to provide a safe environment for all children who are served by the chapter.  Community volunteers who are assigned to work directly with minor recipients shall have ongoing side-by-side member supervision.  The Board shall approve all assignments of community volunteers to work with minor recipients prior to such service by the volunteers.  A satisfactory background check shall be completed for community volunteers who are assigned to work directly with minor recipients prior to any such assignment.
